Israel & Lebanon in the United States Empire

Lebanese soldiers raise their country's flagThe United States arms its client Israel (or Israel is the puppetmaster that controls the United States – it depends whom you ask). The United States also arms a (former) close ally of Israel, Turkey. The United States also arms some of Israel’s neighbors, like Egypt and the Hashemite entity, as a reward for not going to war against Israel. And the United States also arms some of Israel’s neighbors, like Lebanon and the Saudi entity, that actually are still formally in a state of war with Israel.

WTF! Why does this happen?

This is empire if I have ever seen it; the only countries not receiving American arms – Syria, post-1979 Iran, and Iraq between the late 1980s and 2003 – are the exactly the ones in American sights. The Americans don’t make big demands. Really they mostly just want all of their clients not to go to war against one another. When one commits a major aggression against another that’s an act of war, Congress can get antsy and, depending o the client’s value, threats may issue.

That all makes as much sense as it can. What doesn’t make sense is when one of these clients pipes up out of turn and reminds everyone that his country is at war with another client country. What was he thinking? Was it just a gaffe?

America needs Middle Eastern oil, but wants to support Israel because of its Amen Corner, i.e. the neocon NY / LA media / entertainment industry Jews, and the evangelicals who, for their own theological reasons, automatically support Israel, no matter what. So, it gives money and arms to all, to try to pacify and satisfy all. It may be foolish, but it does have a sort of logic, i.e. imperial logic, as you point out…

As for Lebanon’s stupidity, well, these are Arabs we’re talking about…

I’m not sure it’s fair to say that Israel gets all this financial support from the United States because of the lobby, the Jews and the evangelicals. I think it’s much more reasonable to say that the lobby is responsible for the uniformity of support for Israel in certain institutions, such as the Congress – AIPAC invests a tremendous amount of resources, financial and otherwise, in making this happen. But I think if the lobby were to stop functioning, a substantial level support would still be there. And it’s because the United States is an empire. The strategy is simply to support both opposing sides in any conflict. In the conflict of Israel versus the Muslim world, the US supports Israel to the tune of $x and the US supports the Muslim world, also to the tune of $x. Washington wants permanent conflict – not because the American people are bloodthirsty, but because permanent conflict means permanent influence for America. And frankly, $2x/year is a cheap price to pay for being able to control the lives of billions of people.

But why does America want an empire? For the economic benefits that such provides, no doubt; I doubt the elites who run things really care so much that they are controlling the lives of billions, as that they are making tons of money, surely. But maybe I’m naive, and it really is all about control, more than power and money.

Why does America want an empire? Why does anyone want an empire? It’s like asking a businessman if he’d like to have a monopoly or continue in a competitive market. He’ll take the monopoly.

Exactly; my point being, the money’s the key, not the influence over people’s lives (for the business elite; the bureaucrats are only too happy to control more people).
